Tired of working on yourself?
Self-help burnout is real. Stop for a sec…
The reality might be that you’re finding something not working in your life right now.
And a part of you feels like it’s something to change. Like, now. Yesterday, in fact.
I understand the fatigue of self-help. Self-improvement. Self-healing.
So much time, money, energy and attention spent on moving the needle in the right direction (less anxious, more confident, participating in life, not stuck in bed, etc. etc. etc.).
And it gets tiring.
The weariness can bring you to the point of wanting to just give up, or wonder will I ever find my peace? My confidence? My contentment?
Sometimes that give-up place can be great because we stop fighting so hard against ourselves.
Fighting ourselves tends to deepen the struggle.
But it can also be another part that’s asking you to wave your white flag because it doesn’t want you to waste energy and be disappointed with the results.
This part may have concluded it’s safer not to hope…
There’s another way to rest the exhausting inner fight AND move toward what you want.
It doesn’t require apathy, resignation or living with a constant tight chest.
It involves turning toward the parts that are invovled in this inner theatre and getting to know them rather than trying to overcome them.
This is the work of Internal Family Systems (IFS).
Think of it as not pulling the tug of war rope, but neither throwing your hands up in defeat either.
Instead, you turn your attention *toward* the ones who have their white-knuckle grip on the rope and you find out,
What’s happening for you?
What do you need?
What are you afraid would happen if you stopped doing this job (to let go of the rope)?
and then sense…
Can it feel you there with it, can it feel that it’s not alone with this?
And from there, not only does the tug of war unravel, the rope unravels and you can create something more beautiful with it.
Something that even those white-knuckling parts will give their energy toward.
There are some nuances we work with to get to know the parts and allow everything to unwind and re-form, naturally, in 1:1 and group work (informed by Internal Family Systems).
